I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University. My research focuses on both violent and nonviolent civil conflict, with particular attention to the Middle East. More broadly, I investigate how ethnic and religious populations shape political behavior, how conflict affects health outcomes, how international factors influence domestic violence, and how repression and dissent interact. Recently, my work has centered on a cross-national data collection project on political organizations that mobilize on behalf of majority ethnic and religious populations.
Methodologically, I use both observational and experimental data to address key questions in civil conflict and to contribute to broader debates in international relations, comparative politics, and social science. My work has been published or is forthcoming in journals such as Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Party Politics, Politics and Religion, Terrorism and Political Violence, Defence and Peace Economics, Conflict Management and Peace Science, and Social Science & Medicine – Population Health.
